Secure at home:
Home Security 101
Choosing a security system that's right for
your needs
Home security systems are like most any other consumer product; they range in price from reasonable to outrageously expensive. The features of each system are generally related to the price, but that is not always an accurate statement. In addition, when calculating costs, you need to include recurring monthly monitoring fees, maintenance and insurance expenses.
Affordability and features are key.
For most of us who are not 'plugged in' to trendy technological innovations, choosing a basic security system can be a mind-boggling experience. Add to this the option of 24/7 monitoring and system maintenance and what seems like a good idea can quickly become a nightmare. It doesn't have to be this way. X10 security systems offer solutions for any budget, and give you the power of choice.
Types of alarm systems
There are many different types of alarm and monitoring systems. Some are designed to call a phone number if an intruder is detected, or sound an alarm to alert you and scare off intruders. A system can include cameras to record action, or permit remote monitoring from a distant computer. Remote monitoring is a terrific way of watching over the kids when you're at work (i.e. a Nanny Cam), and even keeping an eye on pets (or pesky neighbors).
How do you determine what you need?
Fortunately, you don't have to design the ultimate system on day one. X10 systems are upgradeable, and adding additional components is straightforward and easy to do. Start at the beginning and expand your system from there. Consider how many doors and windows you'd like to add sensors to, and whether you want to observe access points (doors and hallways) and other traffic areas.
If you like the idea of including cameras, select a camera that will work best in your particular situation. As an example, for lowlight areas or nighttime surveillance, you may want to choose floodlight cameras that will turn on floodlights and begin recording if an intruder is detected by a motion sensor. Black and white cameras offer a clear, sharp picture in dim and low light areas. Daylight surveillance is best facilitated by a COLOR camera. You can even add audio surveillance, but check to make sure that your state permits audio surveillance. Learn more...
Basic components of a home security system
The main console is the brain and most important part of the system. The console has a built in powerhorn when tripped. In addition, the console has the ability to store up to four phone numbers to dial in the event it is triggered. X10 Security Systems give you the ability to build your system around the console. You can add additional powerhorns, modules that turn lights on, or cameras to view what is happening. Think modular!
Need 24/7 home monitoring service?
Scores of companies, both local and international provide 24/7 security monitoring. Most of these companies have an army of technicians and trucks and will respond to every question or problem you have… for an additional fee. Unfortunately, this infrastructure network of customer support is reflected in the cost of expensive monthly monitoring.
Part of X10's claim to fame is their DIY modular approach to home security, which permits the homeowner to save significantly on the cost of any system. Installation of these systems is easy and if a battery in a panel or wireless sensor fails, you can replace it yourself.
Orca, a division of X10, now offers you addition peace of mind. For a price much lower than other major brands, you can have your self-installed system monitored 24/7 by a professional central station. Orca will dispatch the police, fire department, or medical aid when there's an emergency at your home. Unlike other, more expensive monitoring services, this security monitoring requires no multi-year contracts, no credit reports, and no hassles. Because you install and maintain your own system the savings are passed back to you!
